Outdoor pig production represents the clearest opportunity for meaningful welfare improvement in pork production. Pigs given access to outdoor environments with appropriate shelter, wallowing opportunities, and rooting substrate demonstrate behavioral richness and positive welfare indicators dramatically superior to indoor confinement. The welfare tradeoffs — higher piglet mortality, parasite challenge, and climate exposure — are manageable with good stockmanship rather than insurmountable. Consumer willingness to pay price premiums for outdoor-reared pork creates sustainable economic incentives for welfare investment. Certification schemes that require genuine outdoor access rather than minimal technical compliance drive the most meaningful welfare improvement.
