The shift toward positive welfare assessment represents a fundamental advance in farm animal welfare science. A farm where animals are not visibly suffering may still be failing to provide the enriched environments where positive experiences occur. Animals in barren, understimulating environments show reduced play, reduced exploration, and pessimistic cognitive biases even in the absence of overt pain or illness. Assessment systems that incorporate positive welfare indicators create accountability for the quality of animal experience rather than merely the absence of severe suffering. This approach also provides clearer targets for welfare improvement: farms can measure progress through increased play frequency, improved qualitative behavioral assessment scores, and positive cognitive bias tests.
