Veterinary behavioral medicine addresses some of the most significant welfare challenges facing companion animals. Animals with untreated behavioral problems often suffer chronic anxiety, frustration, or pain that drives their problematic behavior. They are also at high risk of relinquishment, repeated rehoming, and ultimately euthanasia. Access to qualified behavioral specialists remains unequal, with rural and low-income communities underserved. Telehealth platforms are beginning to address this access gap, but the profession still needs more qualified practitioners and better referral pathways from general practice.
