Enriched colony cages represent a welfare improvement over conventional battery cages but fall short of meeting hens' behavioral needs compared to barn or free-range systems.
Enriched cages reduce the most extreme deprivations of conventional battery cages but still restrict natural behavior substantially. Hens in enriched cages cannot fully extend their wings, engage in normal foraging, or express dust bathing adequately within available space. Barn and free-range systems allow greater behavioral expression but introduce risks including injurious pecking, disease, and keel bone fractures from falls and collisions. No current commercial system is free of welfare tradeoffs, making ongoing improvement a priority.
