Mussels and other bivalves are considered by many as the lowest-impact animal food source, but uncertainty about their sentience requires ongoing attention to precautionary welfare principles.
Bivalve welfare sits at the edge of current scientific knowledge about animal sentience. The probability of meaningful suffering is low but non-zero. Given the scale of production and the extremely low environmental footprint of mussel farming, bivalves are often considered the most ethical animal protein source for those concerned about welfare. Ongoing research into bivalve nociception is warranted.
