Inadequate UV-B provision is a welfare crisis in companion reptile keeping that causes preventable chronic suffering. Metabolic bone disease, caused by vitamin D3 deficiency in reptiles without adequate UV-B access, causes soft, deformed bones, pathological fractures, muscle weakness, and eventual death. It is painful, progressive, and entirely preventable with correct lighting. The complexity of UV-B provision — multiple bulb types, declining output over time, species-specific requirements, and positioning considerations — creates multiple failure points even in well-intentioned keepers.
