Rainbow trout are among the most widely farmed fish globally, and emerging welfare standards are beginning to address the specific needs of this sentient aquatic species.
Farmed trout welfare is underdeveloped relative to salmon welfare in both regulatory attention and certification standards, despite the species being produced in comparable volumes. Trout have similar cognitive capacities and stress physiology to salmon, and many of the same welfare concerns apply — high stocking densities, water quality problems, poor slaughter methods, and lack of environmental enrichment. The evidence that trout experience pain-like states and show avoidance learning following noxious stimuli strengthens the case for taking their welfare seriously. Consumer and regulatory pressure that has begun to drive salmon welfare improvements has yet to meaningfully reach the trout sector, representing an opportunity for targeted welfare advocacy.
