Artificial intelligence and sensor technology are transforming the ability to monitor animal welfare at scale on farms, offering the potential to identify welfare problems earlier and more reliably.
AI-based welfare monitoring technology offers genuinely transformative potential for farm animal welfare. The fundamental limitation of conventional welfare assessment — that it requires skilled human observation, which is expensive and temporally limited — can be substantially overcome by continuous automated monitoring. Sensors that never sleep and algorithms that can process millions of data points detect welfare problems that would previously have gone unnoticed for days. Early identification of lameness, disease, or behavioural abnormalities allows faster intervention and reduces the duration of suffering. However, the technology is only as effective as the management response it enables — automated detection of welfare problems is useless if stockpeople are not trained and empowered to respond. Technology should complement rather than replace skilled human stockpersonship.
