Environmental modification of indoor spaces can dramatically improve cat welfare by meeting the species-specific needs for territory, vertical space, and behavioural opportunity that indoor life restricts.
Indoor cat environmental modification is one of the highest-impact and most accessible welfare interventions available to cat owners. The indoor environment, as typically furnished by humans for human needs, fails to meet most of the behavioural needs that cats evolved to express — territory marking, climbing, hunting simulation, hiding, and watching from height. Simple, affordable modifications including vertical climbing structures, puzzle feeders, window perches, and appropriate hiding spaces transform the indoor environment into one that actively supports feline welfare rather than merely housing the cat. Evidence consistently shows that environmentally enriched cats show lower stress indicators, more positive behavioural states, and fewer stress-related health problems including feline idiopathic cystitis.
