Laboratory rat welfare is a welfare issue of enormous scale. The cognitive complexity demonstrated by rats — including empathy, metacognition, and social sophistication — makes the welfare implications of laboratory conditions deeply significant. Isolated housing in barren cages prevents the expression of social behaviors that are fundamental to rat wellbeing. Enrichment through nesting material, hiding places, and social housing costs little and significantly improves welfare while producing more ecologically and physiologically valid research subjects. The 3Rs framework requires refinement of rat housing conditions, but implementation of even basic welfare improvements like nesting material provision remains inconsistent across research facilities. Consumer pressure on pharmaceutical and cosmetics companies to adopt 3Rs principles in their research is one important lever for change.
