How transitioning toward more plant-rich food systems can reduce animal welfare burden at scale.
Food system transition offers the most significant opportunity to improve animal welfare at scale available to society. The sheer number of animals subject to poor welfare conditions in conventional production means that dietary choices and food policy, multiplied across populations, have welfare implications that dwarf individual rescue or rehabilitation efforts. This does not diminish the importance of improving conditions within existing systems — but a welfare-conscious perspective on food must engage with structural and systemic dimensions as well as individual consumer choices.
