How dietary management affects hippo health and welfare in captive settings.
Dietary management is one of the most significant determinants of hippo welfare in captivity. Obesity from overfeeding or inappropriate diet composition is common and leads to serious secondary health problems including joint disease and metabolic disorders. Wild hippos consume primarily grass — a high-fiber, low-calorie diet entirely different from the fruit-heavy supplemented diets often used in zoo settings. Transitioning captive hippos to more appropriate grass-based diets and managing caloric intake improves long-term health outcomes and reduces the burden of diet-related disease that significantly compromises individual welfare.
