Pangasius welfare occupies an area where production scale is enormous but welfare scrutiny remains limited. The species hardiness means visible welfare problems are rare, but this does not indicate good welfare — chronic stress from high densities and poor water quality suppresses immune function and reduces quality of life. The enormous scale of pangasius production — billions of fish annually — means even small welfare improvements have large aggregate impact. Certification schemes are beginning to address welfare alongside environmental criteria, but significant gaps remain in welfare standard rigor and enforcement.
