Comparing welfare outcomes of different poultry stunning methods including water bath, gas, and controlled atmosphere systems.
Poultry stunning method welfare reflects complex trade-offs between different types of welfare harm. Water bath stunning is efficient but allows pre-stun shocks when birds contact the water before full submersion, and upside-down shackling before stunning causes pain and distress. Gas stunning avoids these harms but CO2 causes aversion in birds before unconsciousness. Inert gas mixtures including argon and nitrogen produce less aversion. The ideal stunning method depends on balancing the welfare of the stunning period against practical and cost considerations in high-throughput systems.
