Livestock transport welfare is advancing through technology that enables real-time monitoring and accountability previously impossible. Remote sensors in vehicles can alert transporters to temperature exceedances, ventilation failures, and animal distress before welfare problems become severe. These systems also create data records that enable welfare auditing and regulatory enforcement. However, technology cannot substitute for journey time limits — the cumulative welfare cost of transport increases with time regardless of monitoring quality, making shorter journeys the most impactful single welfare intervention for transported animals.
