Precision livestock farming (PLF) uses sensors, cameras, and algorithms to monitor individual animal health and welfare at scale. These technologies are creating new possibilities for early intervention and welfare improvement in farm settings.
Precision livestock farming technologies offer genuine welfare benefits when deployed with welfare improvement as an explicit goal. Automated monitoring removes the sampling limitations of human observation: instead of assessing a fraction of animals periodically, PLF systems provide continuous data on every individual. The welfare benefit of early detection — of lameness, disease, metabolic disorders — comes from the opportunity to intervene before suffering becomes severe. However, technology alone cannot substitute for management commitment: data must be acted upon, and PLF systems are only as welfare-positive as the management response they enable.
