Modern animal welfare science has moved beyond preventing negative states to actively promoting positive ones. Positive welfare indicators — play, exploration, positive social interaction — provide a more complete picture of animal wellbeing.
The traditional welfare focus on preventing suffering — eliminating disease, injury, and deprivation — is necessary but insufficient. Animals can be free from obvious suffering while still experiencing a life devoid of positive experiences: play, exploration, social bonds, curiosity satisfaction, and species-typical behavioral expression. Positive welfare science reframes the goal from suffering reduction to flourishing promotion. Farms that can demonstrate positive welfare indicators — play in young animals, affiliative social behavior, curious exploration of novel environments — are achieving something meaningfully better than farms that merely avoid welfare violations. This higher standard is increasingly reflected in leading welfare certification frameworks.
