Dairy cows are cognitively active animals with complex social structures and strong motivation to perform natural behaviors. Barren housing systems fail to meet these needs, producing chronic low-level stress. Enrichment programs that give cows agency and sensory stimulation produce measurable improvements in both welfare and, often, productivity indicators such as milk yield and immune function.
