Dairy goat production involves many of the same welfare challenges as dairy cattle including kid separation, painful procedures, and metabolic stress, with less regulatory attention.
Dairy goats face welfare challenges structurally similar to dairy cows but with less public attention and fewer regulatory protections. Kid separation causes acute distress. Male kid disposal through killing or inadequate rearing is a welfare concern. Barren housing denies the exploration and social complexity goats are highly motivated to engage in. Consumer interest in artisanal goat dairy has not translated into welfare improvement pressure.
