Trailer loading fear is a welfare problem with a well-understood solution: systematic desensitization and positive reinforcement training that builds a horse's confidence with the trailer over time. Force-based loading methods create trauma and make the problem progressively worse. From a welfare perspective, investing time in proper training eliminates the repeated stress of every future journey. Good trailer design also matters: horses are more willing to load into well-lit, spacious, forward-facing or rear-facing trailers. The handler's own calm body language and low-stress approach are equally important components of a safe loading experience.
