Backyard chickens are often acquired with the assumption that they are low-maintenance, but their welfare needs are genuine and require sustained attention. Adequate housing — secure from predators, with perches, nesting boxes, and dust bathing space — is a minimum. Health monitoring is important: chickens mask illness until severely affected, and conditions like internal laying cause prolonged suffering if untreated. The most commonly overlooked welfare issue is end-of-life care: hens past peak laying often receive no veterinary attention despite suffering from reproductive disorders, and humane euthanasia is not always provided when needed. Backyard keepers who take these responsibilities seriously provide their birds with genuinely good lives.
