Humidity management for reptiles is species-critical and frequently incorrect. The welfare consequences range from cosmetic (minor retained shed) to severe (digit loss from circulatory constriction, chronic respiratory infection, systemic dehydration). These problems are entirely preventable with species-appropriate research before acquisition and consistent husbandry. The diversity of reptile humidity requirements means general reptile advice is often dangerously wrong for specific species. A leopard gecko and a green tree python have nearly opposite humidity needs; treating them the same causes one to suffer from dehydration and the other from respiratory disease. Getting humidity right is foundational to reptile welfare.
