Immunocontraception is a welfare-positive revolution in wild horse and donkey population management. Compared to roundup-and-removal or lethal culling, PZP vaccination causes minimal stress (a brief dart injection), preserves social herd structure, and achieves population stabilization without the acute and chronic welfare harms of traditional management. Mares treated with PZP also benefit individually: reduced reproductive cycling and fewer pregnancies reduce the physiological toll of constant reproduction. The primary barriers to wider adoption are program costs and the need for sustained annual treatment — challenges that fade in comparison to the ethical and welfare advantages over alternatives.
