The bit is the primary communication tool in ridden horsemanship, and inappropriate use causes pain that affects horse welfare and performance.
Bit-related pain is a significant but underappreciated welfare issue in equestrian sport. The widespread use of tight nosebands to prevent horses from opening their mouths is particularly concerning — these devices mask pain responses rather than addressing their cause, suppressing natural avoidance behaviors that communicate discomfort. A horse that appears calm under tack due to a tightly fastened noseband may be experiencing significant oral pressure. Equestrian organizations including the FEI have begun addressing this through equipment regulations, but enforcement at grassroots levels remains limited. Rider education about recognizing and responding to discomfort signals is the most important intervention.
