Resource guarding around food is a natural dog behavior that becomes a welfare and safety concern when it escalates to aggression.
Dogs that guard food experience genuine anxiety and stress around resource access — the aggression is a symptom of insecurity, not dominance. When owners respond to growling with punishment, dogs learn that warnings are dangerous to give, and may progress to uninhibited biting without prior signals. This increases risk to humans while also placing the dog at risk of relinquishment or euthanasia. The welfare-correct approach treats guarding as an anxiety disorder: systematic desensitization, trading games that teach the dog that human approach predicts reward, and management to prevent rehearsal of the behavior all reduce its severity over time.
