Poorly fitted saddles are a leading cause of equine back pain, and regular saddle fitting assessment is essential for horse welfare.
Saddle-fit related back pain affects an unknown but large proportion of ridden horses globally. Because horses suppress pain expression and cannot communicate discomfort, chronic back pain from poorly fitted saddles may persist for years undetected. Behavioral changes — unwillingness to stand for mounting, bucking, cold-back behavior, and performance deterioration — are frequently addressed through training rather than veterinary investigation. Pressure mapping during ridden assessment, combined with evaluation by a qualified saddle fitter, provides objective evidence of fit problems. Regular reassessment every 6 months is necessary because horse musculature changes with training and season.
