Welfare Considerations

Farmed salmon welfare is among the most scientifically studied in aquaculture but remains inadequate in practice. Sea lice cause painful tissue damage that salmon actively attempt to scratch against cage nets. While some producers have implemented best practices — lower densities, vaccination against bacterial diseases, snorkel systems to reduce lice — adoption is uneven and economically driven rather than welfare-driven. Humane slaughter is one area where relatively simple technical improvements — ensuring effective stunning before killing — can substantially reduce acute suffering at end of life.
