Dairy goat welfare receives substantially less attention than dairy cattle welfare despite similar ethical issues. Early maternal separation causes acute distress to both mothers and offspring, and the biological drive toward maternal bonding in goats is intense. Tethering — practiced widely in smallholder and backyard farming — prevents exercise, social interaction, and behavioral expression, causing a form of chronic frustration similar to farrowing crate confinement in pigs. The routine killing of male kids represents a welfare and ethical issue that is beginning to receive more public attention, with in-ovo sexing and male kid rearing for meat being explored as alternatives.
