Olfactory enrichment is one of the most accessible and underused forms of cat enrichment. Because cats explore the world primarily through scent, providing novel, interesting smells activates investigation and engagement in ways that visual or tactile enrichment alone cannot. Catnip and silver vine provide hedonic stimulation analogous to play. Prey scents trigger natural investigative sequences. Valerian root activates rolling behavior in some cats. Rotating scent enrichment items — placing them in brown paper bags, hiding them in cardboard tubes, or rubbing them on scratching posts — engages foraging and investigative behavior that would occupy hours of an outdoor cat's time. This form of enrichment is cheap, easy, and profoundly engaging for many cats.
