Cattle Dehorning and Disbudding: The Case for Analgesia and Polled Genetics

Dehorning cattle causes significant pain, and both adequate analgesia and genetic alternatives are available but underused.

Key Facts

Welfare Considerations

Cattle dehorning causes pain that is well-characterized and preventable. Cornual nerve blocks before disbudding eliminate the acute pain response; post-procedural NSAID treatment reduces inflammatory pain over the following 24-72 hours. Despite the availability of these pain management protocols, they are used in fewer than 50% of US cattle operations. The polled genetics solution — breeding cattle that do not grow horns — offers the most complete welfare solution by eliminating the need for the procedure entirely. Research programs in Holstein dairy cattle and Hereford beef cattle have developed polled lines that are increasingly available to producers. Supporting polled breeding programs is arguably the most impactful long-term welfare action available in this area.
