Barrier frustration — also called leash reactivity — occurs when dogs become aroused and frustrated by the inability to reach other dogs or people while on leash. It is one of the most common behavioral challenges for urban dog owners.
A dog that reacts explosively on leash to every passing dog or person lives in a state of chronic low-grade stress, punctuated by acute episodes of intense emotional arousal. Owners of reactive dogs also experience significant stress, often avoiding exercise and socialization for their dog, which compounds the problem. Effective behavior modification addresses the emotional state underlying the reaction rather than the behavior itself. The "look at that" (LAT) protocol and systematic desensitization have strong evidence bases for improving reactive behavior.
