Thunderstorm phobia is one of the most common and distressing anxiety disorders in dogs. Understanding the multiple sensory triggers helps owners develop comprehensive management strategies.
Untreated thunderstorm phobia causes acute suffering several times per year and can destroy furniture, injure dogs attempting to escape, and in severe cases lead to euthanasia. Because it worsens over time, early intervention is critical. A multi-modal approach works best: a safe retreat space (ideally an interior room or crate), sound masking or white noise, anti-static measures, and in moderate-to-severe cases, veterinary medication used predictively before the storm arrives. Desensitization and counterconditioning to storm recordings can help mild cases but is rarely sufficient for moderate-severe phobia without medication.
