Trout welfare is an emerging area where the scientific evidence for pain capacity has outpaced welfare regulation and industry practice. The Fish Welfare Initiative and similar organizations are working with producers to improve conditions, but the challenge is significant given the scale of production and the low margins in aquaculture. Welfare improvements — lower stocking density, improved slaughter methods, better water quality management, and disease prevention — have both ethical and commercial justifications, as stressed fish grow more slowly and have higher disease rates. Consumer awareness is growing, and certification schemes are beginning to address fish welfare outcomes.
