Welfare Considerations

GI stasis causes severe pain — the combination of intestinal distension, gas accumulation, and abdominal cramping is acutely agonizing. Rabbits that hide illness until late in the progression of stasis may be in extreme pain for hours before owners recognize the problem. Prevention centers on hay provision: a rabbit eating its body size in hay daily maintains the gut motility that prevents stasis. Any rabbit that stops eating, produces fewer fecal pellets, or appears hunched or uncomfortable should be assessed by a rabbit-savvy vet within hours, not the next day.
