The welfare of small-farm and organic poultry varies enormously based on the specific standards applied and the management quality of the individual operation. The most reliable welfare indicator for poultry is breed selection: fast-growing breeds have structural welfare problems regardless of management system. Certification schemes that specify slower-growing breeds (Soil Association in the UK, Label Rouge in France, GAP Step 3+ in the US) are more reliable welfare indicators than organic certification alone. The combination of slower-growing breed, outdoor access, and lower stocking density achieves the best welfare outcomes.
