The welfare impact of cow-calf separation and more humane weaning alternatives in dairy farming.
Cow-calf separation is one of the most welfare-significant practices in conventional dairy farming and one that generates considerable public concern. The maternal bond between cows and calves is strong and behaviorally evident — the vocalizations of separated pairs persist for days and are clearly distress signals. Farm systems that allow extended contact, gradual weaning, or at minimum visual and olfactory contact after separation reduce the magnitude of distress. Some progressive farms are exploring models where calves remain with their mothers for extended periods while still producing milk for human consumption. These systems have welfare, marketing, and even production benefits that challenge the assumption that early separation is economically inevitable.
