Welfare Considerations

Cats who avoid litter boxes are not being difficult — they are responding to something about the box design, placement, maintenance, or social context that fails to meet their needs. The standard commercial litter box is often too small, has the wrong substrate, smells of artificial fragrance, or is positioned in a way that creates vulnerability. What You Can Do

Upgrade to a large uncovered litter box — at minimum 45x35cm, preferably larger for big cats
Use unscented, fine-grained clumping litter and switch gradually if changing from another type
Scoop at least once daily and completely change litter weekly for single-cat households
Position litter boxes away from food, water, and appliances in quiet, easily accessible locations
