Canine parvovirus causes one of the most severe welfare emergencies in veterinary medicine. Affected puppies experience profuse bloody diarrhea, vomiting, extreme lethargy, and dehydration progressing rapidly to life-threatening systemic illness. The suffering involved is intense and the mortality rate without treatment is extraordinarily high. Even with intensive treatment, some dogs do not survive. Vaccination is dramatically effective at preventing this suffering and is one of the clearest welfare arguments for routine preventive veterinary care. Unvaccinated dogs — whether through owner omission, financial constraint, or misinformation — face preventable welfare catastrophe. Access to affordable vaccination is therefore a welfare equity issue as much as an individual care responsibility.
