How foraging enrichment meets the cognitive and behavioral needs of companion parrots and birds.
Companion parrot welfare is compromised in the majority of pet homes not from deliberate neglect but from the extraordinary gap between wild foraging complexity and bowl feeding. A parrot whose entire caloric need is provided in an accessible bowl has hours of empty waking time and a highly evolved brain with nothing to do. Feather destruction, screaming, and stereotypic behavior are the behavioral expression of this welfare deficit.
