Bison farming exists in a welfare space different from conventional cattle production because bison retain more wild behavioral characteristics than domesticated cattle. Their flight instinct is strong, their response to inappropriate handling is more intense, and their space requirements for normal behavioral expression are substantially higher. Farms that manage bison with these species-specific needs in mind — using low-stress handling design, providing adequate space and pasture, and aligning calving timing with natural cycles — achieve better welfare outcomes than those applying cattle management practices to a species for which they are poorly suited. The growing market for bison as a premium alternative protein creates an opportunity to develop welfare standards from the outset of a relatively young industry.
