Dog body language literacy is a welfare issue because dogs who successfully communicate through subtle signals rarely need to escalate to aggression. When subtle signals — turning away, yawning, lip licking, crouching — are ignored or misread by humans who continue interactions the dog is requesting to end, the dog's only remaining option is a more forceful response. Most dog bites are preceded by communication that was missed or overridden. Teaching owners, children, and the general public to read canine body language creates an environment where dogs' communication is respected, reducing both the incidence of bites and the chronic stress of having one's signals consistently ignored. Body language education is simultaneously a bite prevention strategy and a welfare improvement.
