Cat cognitive enrichment addresses an often-underestimated dimension of feline welfare. The popular image of cats as independent and aloof can mislead owners into thinking that cats require less mental engagement than dogs. Research on cat cognition reveals active problem-solving, spatial learning, and social learning abilities that are underused in most pet cat environments. Puzzle feeders are the most accessible cognitive enrichment, but training sessions — teaching cats to respond to names, follow targets, or perform simple behaviors for rewards — provide cognitive challenge with the added benefit of positive human-cat interaction. Cats who receive regular cognitive enrichment show behavioral profiles consistent with better welfare: more playful, more engaged, and less prone to anxiety-related behaviors.
