Wildlife Conservation and Individual Animal Welfare

How conservation biology and individual animal welfare perspectives can be integrated.

Key Facts

Welfare Considerations

The relationship between conservation biology and individual animal welfare is a genuine philosophical tension in environmental ethics. Conservation has historically prioritized species and ecosystem-level outcomes over individual animal welfare — culling overpopulated species, capturing and radio-tagging individuals, and translocating animals all cause individual welfare harm in service of population objectives. The compassionate conservation movement challenges this hierarchy, arguing that the individual animals within populations deserve moral consideration that should constrain how conservation interventions are designed and implemented. This does not mean abandoning conservation, but rather asking whether individual welfare costs are minimized, whether less welfare-costly alternatives exist, and whether welfare consideration is systematically built into intervention planning.
