Multi-cat household stress is significantly underrecognized. Most tension between cats in shared homes is not expressed through obvious fighting but through subtle coercion: one cat blocking another's access to the litter box, food bowl, or exit route. The blocked cat develops chronic stress that manifests as house soiling, over-grooming, recurrent cystitis, and behavioral withdrawal. Managing multi-cat welfare requires treating the household as a system: ensuring adequate resources at multiple locations, providing sufficient vertical space, creating escape routes that cannot be guarded, and in some cases separating genuinely incompatible cats.
