Environmental modification is the most underutilized tool in feline welfare and behavior management. Cats cannot change their environment — they can only react to it. When the environment does not meet their needs, they respond in ways that create conflict with their owners: soiling, scratching, fighting, and over-grooming. Changing the environment to provide adequate resources, vertical space, hiding spots, appropriate scratching surfaces, and visual stimulation often resolves these problems without any direct training. This approach is welfare-positive because it addresses the cause of behavior problems rather than attempting to suppress behavioral symptoms of unmet needs.
