Harbor porpoises are the most frequently killed marine mammals in European fisheries bycatch, with tens of thousands dying annually in gillnets causing significant welfare and conservation concerns.
Harbor porpoise bycatch represents one of the largest-scale marine mammal welfare problems in European waters. Each drowning event involves an intelligent, air-breathing animal experiencing hypoxia and terror over 4-6 minutes before death. The scale — potentially 40,000-80,000 deaths annually in European waters alone — is staggering. Acoustic pinger technology is proven, affordable, and effective at reducing bycatch without significantly affecting fish catch. Regulatory requirements for pinger use exist in some fisheries but are inconsistently enforced. Consumer pressure on retailers to source fish from pinger-equipped vessels would drive widespread adoption.
