Sport horse breeding has historically prioritized performance traits — jump scope, movement quality, speed — at the expense of soundness, temperament, and longevity. Progressive breeding programs now recognize that these goals are not separate: unsound horses cannot perform, poor temperament creates welfare problems and safety risks, and breeding for longevity is economically rational as well as ethically appropriate. Selecting for horses that remain sound, comfortable, and willing throughout long careers produces both better athletes and better welfare outcomes. The studbook reforms introducing health testing and longevity tracking represent meaningful progress in welfare-informed breeding.
