Technology is addressing one of the fundamental challenges in fish welfare: the difficulty of observing millions of individual fish continuously for welfare-relevant behavioral indicators. Computer vision systems can now monitor swimming behavior, schooling patterns, surface avoidance, and fin damage continuously across entire cages. Machine learning algorithms identify behavioral anomalies that correlate with disease, poor water quality, or aggression. These systems allow earlier intervention to address welfare problems before they become severe. While technology cannot substitute for science-based welfare standards and committed producers, it can dramatically improve the speed and consistency of welfare monitoring at commercial scale.
