Litter type is a welfare variable that is frequently determined by human preference (odor control, appearance, environmental credentials) rather than cat preference. The result is litter box avoidance that owners interpret as behavior problems when it is simply communication: this substrate does not meet my needs. Cats' strong substrate preferences are rooted in their natural inclination to dig in fine-grained soil for elimination — fine, unscented, clumping litter most closely approximates this. Environmental or novelty litters that deviate significantly from this template should be introduced alongside familiar substrate with choice — allowing the cat to demonstrate their preference rather than assuming the marketed product will be accepted.
