Livestock Guardian Dogs (LGDs) work to protect flocks and herds from predators, with welfare considerations related to working conditions, socialization, and the quality of their human relationship.
Livestock guardian dog welfare is shaped by the working conditions and management quality of their farms. LGDs that receive adequate nutrition, appropriate veterinary care (including parasite management), shelter from extreme weather, and sufficient human social contact live good working lives that align with their bred purposes. LGDs who are underfed, have untreated health conditions, or lack adequate shelter experience significant welfare compromise despite being technically "free" on a farm. The dogs' welfare and their protective effectiveness are aligned — well-cared-for LGDs are more effective guardians. Investment in LGD welfare is therefore both an ethical and practical farming choice.
